After spending 4 yrs in a pow camp in 1942 in Europe.
He decided to pursue art.as a way to support his family. He studied art in London and Paris.
He then moved to Canada and
After settling in Banff he grew close to the First Nations and did numerous portraits of chiefs and other noteworthy Cdns at the time.
For his work in supporting First Nations communities and his art he received the order of Canada.
Throughout his travels he also was consigned to do portraits of well known people.
This work is Gilbert Eaton
It is a pastel on sandpaper which De Grandmaison imported from France.
Gilbert Eaton was the son of Timothy Eaton yes the Timothy Eaton of Eaton's department stores.
A chain of Canadian owned department stores.
Gilbert ran the Western stores in Canada for many years.
Measures: aprox 32 inches x 25 inches
The frame on this astonishing portrait is a hand carved ornate frame.
