Greetings neighbors! I thought to tell you about the Buy Nothing Project app. I have already posted several gifts there, including kids things, edible things, a piece of furniture, and a gift of service, so please feel free to go take a look and hopefully there is something for everyone!
The Buy Nothing Project is a movement that started in Bainbridge Island, WA, where the motto is "people over stuff." The goal is to build intentional gift economies where we give and receive gifts, and get to know our neighbors.
One thing that makes the Buy Nothing Project app unique is that it isn't "first come first serve" so it is excellent for people who don't have access to Facebook all of the time, and for people who are taking a brain break from social media!
Instead of a "first come first serve" model which often feels like a "race" to be the first to press "next", participants are encouraged to comment on the post, "Could I please be considered for this?" or, "my dog would love this!" or something of that nature. The giver lets the item "simmer" for about 24 hours to give everyone whose is interested time to express interest. Then, the giver is
free to choose whomever they'd like to give to. Sometimes they do this by random draw, or they will just choose somebody, but in the end it is always up to the giver to decide.
You are also welcome to make an "ask" post and write about something you're looking for.
No gift or ask is too big or too small, and the beauty of Buy Nothing is that they are all considered equal, from a cup of flour, to a gift of gardening help, to a couch!
In the app, we have the option to make "gift", "ask" and "gratitude" posts, and all gifts are freely given and freely received with gratitude.
Other than "stuff" people are also free to give gifts of service or friendship. Plus, it is always a happy surprise when some "useless" thing that was lying around your house can be used by someone else--before I moved back here I used to be part of a Buy Nothing Group in Vancouver, and one day on a whim I posted some empty egg cartons. As it turned out, someone in the group was collecting empty egg cartons to sound-proof his music room!

Another wondrous source is the book "The Buy Nothing, Get Everything Plan" by Liesl Clark and Rebecca Rockefeller, who started the movement. It is quite a happy read and is available in our FVRL library system.

Thank you!
