I have it somewhere.’ But then I began to ask myself where it was, what volume it was in, and was I sure that I had that particular volume. Unable to answer these questions, I decided that the best of Leacock ought to be collected in one substantial but not unwieldy volume, not too bulky for a bedside table. If his publishers were agreeable, I would edit the book myself, thus making sure that all my own favourite Leacock pieces would be there.
